Flowers For a Purpose

This program brings together people with intellectual/developmental challenges, volunteers and area senior citizens who want to learn about flowers and create beautiful floral arrangements.  The finished bouquets are then shared with the participants and community members who may appreciate a little extra sunshine in their day.  The sessions also encourage friendships in relaxed settings that enhance social skills.

Caring During COVID

At the onset of the global coronavirus pandemic, the Kathy B. Davis Foundation had to re-imagine its monthly Flowers for a Purpose sessions.  The events typically bring together area individuals with special needs and Cherokee County senior citizens to create floral bouquets that are shared with the participants, assisted living residents, and neighbors who may need a little pick-me-up.  With quarantines in place at nursing homes and assisted living facilities this spring, the in-person activities were canceled, but the desire to maintain the relationships continued.  Jim Bennett, a well-known local artist and Flowers for a Purpose volunteer, created a special mixed-media drawing that was printed as a greeting card, signed by the volunteers and sent to the senior living communities that participate in the program.  Recently, as several facilities began to allow outside deliveries, the volunteers are once again creating bouquets, now done off-site, to share with the residents and staff.  Volunteers and participants. alike, are looking forward to the time when they can join together, once again, to share their love of flowers and one another.
